Grade 8 | "Catcher in the Rye" Response

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Directions: Choose an option. Write a paper. Simple.

If you have opted to write a 1-page paper, it is due no later than November 5th.
All 2-page papers are due no later than November 12th.

Response Options

1)  William James argues that we all fall victim to constant thought, “like birds in flight.” Holden’s internal monologue is fueled by blunt observations and alternating memories: one always leads to another. Some argue that this makes him an unreliable narrator.

Write a 2-page story using narrative techniques similar to those that Salinger employs in the novel.

Depict yourself, or your character, in a setting, create a specific mood with diction, and express a complete idea with fragmented content. Take command of your writing style.
*Disregard all standard writing conventions for this option.

2)      Holden’s disdain for “phonies” and cynicism towards adults creates an entirely new meaning of “teenage angst.” Think about what Holden’s definition of “phony” might be.

Write a 2-page paper that conceptualizes the term “phony.” Discuss any alleged “phonies” in your life. Prove that you have analyzed the characteristics that make these people/things “phony.” Reflect on your perceptions of these “phonies.” Could you ever have empathy for them?

*Use pseudonyms if necessary.

3)  Even though the novel is written in first-person, we are allowed a multi-dimensional view of Holden. While we hear his internal monologue, we are also able to see Holden through his dialogue with other characters.

Write a 2-page paper that defines your perception(s) of Holden. What were your initial reactions to him? Are they still the same? Use at least three strong words to describe him. Would you be Holden’s friend? Enemy? Explain why.

4)  You may opt to write about anything for this assignment; however, it must be remotely related to our class discussions about Catcher in the Rye.

You must submit a written proposal for your paper within one week (minimum) of your due date.
*This option requires a Dear Reader Letter.
